

PSE&G SALEM / HOPE CREEK: SECURITY UPGRADES

The project consisted of fast-tracked security upgrades required by the NRC at the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Plants in Hancock’s Bridge, NJ, including:
- Installation of a 1.6 mile concrete vehicle barrier, 3.5’ high by 10’ wide. Over a mile was cast-in-place
and removable precast concrete blocks were used for the balance. - Installation of 9 new ballistic resistant guard towers, and relocation of others.
- Excavation for 10,000 feet of razor security fence, including underground conduits and wiring
necessary to install the associated intruder detection systems, microwaves, cameras, etc. - Installation of security fence, gates, operators and electronics.
- Installation of roof-top defensive guard positions and concealment walls on several plant buildings
- Demolition of 11 existing buildings
- Entombment of multiple doorways on the interior of the turbine buildings and the exterior of others
- Installation of numerous structural steel screens, security cages, and other impairments
- Installation of CCTV cameras throughout the plant
- Re-construction of the entrance and exit roads with new guide rail & signage
- Installation of a new rifle and pistol range with a 40’ tower and automated target system
- Installation of new active vehicle barrier systems
- Installation of a new vehicle prescreening area
- Installation of new site lighting
- PSEG Security Checkpoint Upgrade

The critical path work was completed on schedule, in less than 3 months, primarily within the plant’s “Protected Area”.
