UNDERGROUND THERMAL PIPING SYSTEM CAESARS TRANSPORTATION CENTER
Location
Atlantic City, New Jersey
This Design / Build project consisted of designing and installing a steam and condensate and chilled water interconnection piping system to tie in the new Transportation Center for Caesars Hotel and Casino to the existing Thermal Distribution System. The existing underground 18” Steam and 8” Condensate and 36” Chilled Water Supply and Return Piping had to remain operational throughout the construction process.
The distribution system included:
- 100 TF of 12” Chilled Water Supply and Return Piping.
- 100 TF of 4”Steam and 3” Condensate, Class A Piping System.
- (1) Cast in Place Concrete Manhole for the tie ins to the existing steam and condensate piping
- .300 TF of Communication Conduits for fiber optic lines.
Challenges faced on this project:
- Construction took place under a newly constructed parking garage for the transportation center.
Excavation and dewatering for a 20’ deep hole had to be accomplished with minimal clearance under
the structure’s first floor. - The parking garage was still under construction during the project, so the safety of JINGOLI’s employees
and construction workers in the vicinity did careful planning and coordination. - An extensive dewatering system had to be installed and maintained throughout the construction
process. Excavation around the existing, live high-pressure steam lines was required to bee performed. Support of these lines, as well as the two 36″ active chilled water lines had to be designed since they were undermined by 10 feet for over 30 feet in length. - Concrete work for the poured in place manhole was performed around these exposed lines and constructed minimal heigh clearances.
