Joseph Jingoli & Son, Inc. provided complete Pre-construction and Construction Management services for the new 72,000 SF Union County Juvenile Detention Facility located in a light-industrial area of Linden, New Jersey.
The new facility makes ample use of glass, flooding the interiors with natural light, while allowing views to the outside. Hand rails and doors are wooden instead of metal. Toilets and sinks are separate from the sleeping rooms.
To replace overt signs of security, high-impact glass was used instead of steel-barred windows. Staff members use swipe cards to enter and exit different areas, removing the use of keys. Classrooms were built along a glass walled corridor so teachers never feel isolated.
The new seventy-six-bed facility features a circular design, with sixteen and twelve-bed housing units arranged around a day room. In addition to the outdoor recreation yard, a small basketball court and a half-scale gym were included.
